The Dogue de Bordeaux is one of the oldest French dog races, and as indicated by the name, the race comes from Bordeaux. In the 19th Century the dogs were used for hunting, dogfights and as watchdogs, guarding house and cattle. Already in 1863, when the first dog exhibition took place in Paris, the dog-race participated under the name Dogue de Bordeaux. Even though the race has been close to extinction several times, the Bordeaux gotten a vast fanbase since the 1960's.
The short fur's color is fawn with black , brown, or no mask. The Dogue de Bordeaux has a frightening look as they are strong, very muscular, short and athletic with an almost monumental look, which stands in striking contest to their calm, balanced and sensitive nature.
As an old fighting dog the Dogue de Bordeaux is a talented guardian, and it will perform its guard duty with alertness and great courage - but without aggressiveness!
The Dogue de Bordeaux is a great companion, very tied to its owner and very loving. They are calm, well balanced and highly tolerant. The males normally have a more dominating nature. The Dogue de Bordeaux is devoted to its kin and will walk through fire and water for its owner.
